Google maps gives horrid directions. Also will only work when you have a data connection. And when you don’t is when you probably need the GPS the most. And they use their own maps which aren’t as thorough as a Naviteq or Tele Atlas application.

Haven’t given the new HTC navigator a fair shake and I doubt I will.

Others available in order of my preference as #1 being the most preferred for me:
1. Sygic (Aura)
2. Navigon
3. NDrive
4. CoPilot
5. Anything IGo

Many of these have free trials from the market. So give it a go and judge for yourself. Just reading the Description from it’s listing in the market will tell you everything about the app.

The original HTC Desire was one of the biggest selling Android handsets of its time. Now, HTC has released the update to the Desire, the HTC Desire S. But what has HTC actually changed in the new model?

First let’s take a look at the physical size and weight of both mobile phones; the HTC Desire S is slightly lighter and smaller, than its predecessor, the Desire S: 130g, 115 by 59.8 by 11.6mm,while the Desire is 135g, 115 by 59.8 by 11.6mm. There really isn’t much in it but the HTC Desire S takes it due to been 5g lighter than the original.

HTC Desire Vs HTC Desire S

Processor and memory; although they both have processors running at 1GHz, the HTC Desire S has a better graphics processing unit, more RAM and more internal storage than the first Desire. Combined with the lighter weight the HTC Desire S looks like a very worthwhile upgrade.

One the most talked about features of the Desire S is its HD (High Definition) camera, capable of capturing vivid and clear pictures and videos. The Desire has 5 megapixel camera, LED photo light, 720 video recording, and similar to the original Desire a 0.3-megapixel front facing camera, allowing you to shoot self-portrait and video calls.

Now let’s compare the software of both mobile phones; the HTC Desire now comes with Android 2.2 Froyo, while the HTC Desire S has Android 2.4 Gingerbread, which is the latest version of android meant for phones, it also includes an online phone-management service called HTC Sense. Both the HTC Desire and HTC Desire S have the same screen resolution and dimension which is 3.7- inch, 480×800-pixel resolution. Another factor which made HTC Desire S more efficient is that it allows you an extra 190 minutes of talk time and 430 hours standby, while the Desire only gives 400 minutes talk time and 340 hours standby.

And lastly, since both mobile phones are known for their internet connection let us also compare which is faster; the Desire S download speed is up to 14.4 Mbps, up to 5.7 Mbps upload speed over 3G.802.11n Wi-Fi and also has DLNA that allows you to wirelessly connect to your home cinema equipment, if you want to view and watch the pictures and videos you have taken with your phone, and the Desire only has up to 7.2Mbps download speed, up to 2Mbps upload speed. Clearly the HTC Desire S phone is more proficient than its brother the HTC Desire. The HTC Desire S has more storage space, faster internet connection, higher pixel for the camera usage, and is definitely lighter and has a sleeker look than the first version.

But it also depends on the person buying the certain mobile phone. For some maybe the HTC Desire is already more than capable in performing its functions and are perfectly okay with it, and then there are people who would like to be able to multi-task a lot of things. As long as the mobile phone can cater to what you really need especially the budget-wise then be sensible with your choices.

When a person is looking to buy a new mobile phone there are several factors that help to make that decision. A few of the major deciding factors are screen size, Operating System, applications and a few given features such as camera and screen sensitivity. One of the phones that contain some the best features is the HTC Desire. With the addition of the Android Operating system, users can download hundreds of applications to make the phone unique and fit their personal style. Overall, the HTC Desire is a very good phone and will allow users a wide range of customizable options.

One of the best features about the HTC Desire is that it has the Android Marketplace. The Marketplace offers some of the best applications for a mobile phone. Only second to the Apple App Store (in terms of available apps at least), the Android Marketplace offers applications that range from RSS Readers to a mobile Facebook application. One of the most popular applications you can download for the phone is the Facebook app. This app gives users the ability to update their status and view the status of their friends while they are away from their computer. Overall, thanks to HTC Sense, this phone has some of the best applications at its disposal and makes full use of them.

Another one of the notable features on the HTC Desire is the 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Not many phones have a processor that allows them to use their phone at the speed it is capable of. With this particular processor, users of the phone can navigate the phone without any lag. Especially with many of the graphically advanced applications, the processor will allow users to get the most out of their favourite applications. Another great thing about the Snapdragon processor is the fact that surfing the web is much faster. A typical web enabled phone will have a hard time loading many web pages within a reasonable amount of time. With the processor that the HTC Desire has, depending on the service plan, users can get to any website they want almost instantly.

Perhaps the most important feature of this particular phone is its HTC Sense Interface. Unique to only HTC devices, the Sense Interface adds a new experience to the interface of a mobile device. For phones that are running the Android or Windows mobile, the 3D interface makes the main screen of the phone interactive. Perhaps the most popular of these displays is the pond interface. Users can touch the screen of their phone and it will send ripples out as if it was an actual pond. This is one of the main reasons users like HTC because no other phone has anything similar.

Overall, HTC phones are relative newcomers but they have come a long way since they were first released. Even though the iPhone may still be the number one phone in terms of sales, HTC and Android have become a force in mobile technology and it may not be long before they are outdoing Apple in the sales charts.

The HTC Desire Z is the latest in Desire themed mobiles. Ever since the first of its kind, designers have been seeking to improve it as best they can. Is this mobile vibrant and unique enough to stand out from its predecessors, however?

Appearance-wise, the most noticeable thing about the HTC Desire Z is its amazing QWERTY keyboard. Unlike most phones, it swings out smoothly, with a small barrier of plastic between it and the bottom of the phone. This results in the keyboard swiveling out smoothly. The buttons are also well defined and well designed, making it perfect for even large fingers to type out fast messages. Our only real downside is that the plastic barrier may attract dirt and grime. At 180g, the keyboard certainly makes the phone feel very heavy and solid. However, it doesn’t feel as comfortably sturdy as other phones.

Its 3.7 inch capacitive screen is enormous and incredibly colourful. Combine an Android 2.2 with the HTC Sense interface and you have an incredible phone for navigation. New users may find it takes some getting used to, but those used to HTC mobiles will find it a breeze to use.

That aside, its five megapixel camera is also quite impressive, featuring a strong LED flash with autofocus, geo tagging, face detection, and 720p HD video recording. While a Xenon flash would have been even stronger, we found its flash was able to illuminate everything from gloomy to dark settings. Pictures and videos come out crisp, vivid, and sharp and its geotagging allows you to show where they are before you upload them directly to Flickr or Twitter.

Its internet related features are incredible as well. Featuring wi-fi, Bluetooth, GPRS, 3G, HDSPA, EDGE, USB, and much more, this phone is dedicated to keeping you online. As you can imagine, its lovely QWERTY keyboard is great for tapping out messages and writing emails. Viewing movies on its large and lovely screen is also a treat. Having Android also means there are Google features to enjoy, including Google Talk, Gmail, Google Maps, and much more. Its Friend Stream widget integrates all of your social networking sites into one easy spot, and there are dozens of apps and widgets to enjoy from the Android Market.

We also enjoyed its music related features, which include a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a capable music player. This allows you to use your own headphones instead of the set that comes with the box. Sound quality remains crisp and clear as well.

When it comes to memory and talk time, you get a bundle. With 1.5G of internal memory, plus a microSD card, you have more than enough room to store your favourite tunes, photos, videos, texts, and more. 400 minutes of talk time and 430 hours of standby means its battery life isn’t quite as good as other phones, but you won’t be charging constantly either.

All in all, the HTC Desire Z is an amazing little phone. Well equipped, with a unique and reliable QWERTY keyboard and a great screen, there is little to complain about. However, if its fragile body or odd keyboard isn’t to your liking, there are plenty of others to consider. For the most part, this one is definitely worth checking out.

Now, don’t take this the wrong way. We still love the HTC Desire and continue to consider it to be the best Android phone currently available in the world today – it’s just that HTC’s custom HTC Sense user interface isn’t to everyone’s taste.

Some of the supplied apps have been tweaked a little too much by HTC’s eager-to-please software developers, straying so far from the Android norm they’re totally unrecognisable – and lacking some of the newer features found in the latest third-party apps found on the Android Market.

Top 10 HTC Desire Android Apps

So, to redress the balance, we thought we’d compile a list of the best apps for the HTC Desire to help it hold onto its top smartphone status for another year.

Apps that complement the installed options without putting anyone’s nose out of joint.

More cool things to put on your HTC Desire, basically.

1. gReader

2. Data checker

Astro Android App is a File Manager for the Android OS. It allows you to manage files on your phone without the need for a computer. Operations you can perform: copy, paste, move, delete, open with other apps, create and folders, etc. What’s convenient about Astro File Manager is the ability to select multiple files to perform actions. Another convenient feature is the ability to Search for files. The app also provides details on Android apps such as package name, version, file size, and even app activities.

ASTRO File Manager Android App features the ability to backup Android Apps to SD card… a band-aid for the loud public cry from Android users who want to free up low internal phone memory without Rooting the phone. This means you can backup the installer files (APK) on your SD Card, then you can uninstall the app. Thus freeing up space but removing the app. To reuse the app, you will have to reinstall the app from the backup.

We’ve spotted a number of you talking about the battery life of the HTC Desire, and I thought this might be of interest. We had a little play with the phone to work out how to make the battery last as long as possible – take a look at our list below. Depending on how much you’re using your phone, we’ve found that a combination of these can extend your battery life by a good couple of hours.

1. Disable ‘Wireless Network Positioning Services’ – Go to ‘Menu’, then ‘Settings’, then ‘Location’ and finally ‘Use Wireless Networks’ where you can choose to turn off the position service. You don’t need to turn off the GPS checkbox since GPS only operates in conjunction with services that access it.

2. Turn Off Wi-Fi – Select ‘Menu’, then ‘Settings’, followed by ‘Wireless Controls’ and then un-check ‘Wi-Fi’. Having Wi-Fi on permanently can really impact battery life.

3. Turn Off the Weather App – This is a function that constantly pulls data, which in turn drains battery. Turn this function off by doing the following: ‘Menu’, then ‘All Programs’, followed by ‘Weather’. Then choose the ‘Menu’ option from within the Weather program and choose ‘Settings’ where you can disable ‘Update Automatically’. Now you can just pull Weather information when you want it.

4. Set your other constantly updating applications to lower update frequencies – there’s really no menu to navigate here, it depends on the applications you’re using. For example you could set the Facebook app to only update once an hour rather than every 5 minutes.

5. Turn down screen brightness by navigating to ‘Menu’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Sound & Display’ > ‘Brightness’. You can drag the brightness down slightly to save on battery life. This is really a personally preference option, but factory settings offer a blaring brightness.

6. Try a 3rd party task management application from the Android Market such as ‘Automatic Task Killer’. But remember not to close tasks that are important for day to day use such as Email, Calendar or Clock.

7. The moving wallpapers on the Desire are a really nice touch, but if you think you can live without them then your phone’s battery will love you for it! Go to ‘Menu’, then ‘Wallpaper’, and select anything other than ‘Live Wallpapers’.

None of these are compulsory remember, and the battery life of any phone will always be dependent on your own individual usage. But let us know how you get on, and if you find any tips of your own.

First – go into your contacts and hit menu -> View

If they are all under google then great, this is easy. Just go into settings -> Sync > Google Mail Account -> Contacts -> Check the box. Then press sync now. Then go check google to make sure they are there.
(That’s the easiest way)

IF the contacts are under phone it is a little more work but still able to be done.
First you’ll have to export to the sd card. Then when that is done it will appear they are gone (they’re not – don’t panic – I did this once). Now – import to the phone – but choose google as the contact input. Then follow instructions above.

Once that is done you can reset.

Good luck!! Let us know how it goes.
